How to Play OpenGuessr - Geo Guessing

You start the game off on a random road, pretty much anywhere in the world, and each round does just the same. You get placed within a street-level panorama with no hints, though you can freely navigate the virtual map, so keep your eyes peeled for road signs, language, the shape of a mountain, and the color of the soil.

Explore your surroundings as much as possible, and once you have an idea of where you are based on the details, place your pin on the actual map in the bottom right-hand corner and click "Guess" to find out just how close you got. The closer your guess, the higher your score.

Customize Your Geographical Location

OpenGuessr will often put you in the middle of a rural area, which makes the game competitive for avid geography buffs, but a bit more difficult for your average player. Whether you're a casual explorer or a hardcore geography nerd, there's a map for you.

You can customize your maps by going to Menu > Maps. Start with Capital Cities or Famous Places to get your bearings, then work up to the World map, a competitive standard that pulls from remote, rural, and obscure locations all over the globe. If that's still not enough of a challenge, individual country maps will test just how well you really know a place. And if you want to gain a bit more confidence, start with your own city if it's within the options.

There is an enormous library of custom maps, over 5,000 to be more precise, made by real players. So you are not limited to the default ones you start with.

Game Modes

OpenGuessr allows you to take on 1v1 Duels, jump into multiplayer competitions, or try special modes like Country Guesser and Image Guesser for a different kind of challenge. You can also spice things up with unique restrictions like grayscale view or no movement, which force you to rely on subtler clues than usual. These can be quite challenging.

Test your skills on competitive leaderboards, challenge friends in private games, and earn badges and pins for reaching in-game achievements.

Play with Friends

OpenGuessr is a multiplayer game, so you don't have to go at it alone. Send messages directly to other players through the built-in chat system, and join the active Discord community where players share strategies, map recommendations, and the occasional humbling screenshot.
